Let customers download files from Customer Account pages

Use this guide if you want customers to download their files from their Shopify customer account. By the end, customers will sign in, open an order, click Access Downloads, and get their files in a popup, without searching old emails.

Before you begin

  • Customers must sign in to their account to download. Check that customer accounts are turned on in your Shopify admin under Settings > Customer accounts.
  • This replaces the download page on your store. With Customer Account page selected, links in Filemonk's emails open the order's status page in the customer's account instead.
  • Part of the setup happens in Shopify's Checkout editor, not in Filemonk. Any change you make there must be saved in Shopify.

What customers will see

Customers see Filemonk in these places in their account:

Where

What appears

Setup

Orders list and Order Status page

Access Downloads button in the order’s action menu. Opens a popup with the thank-you message, every file on the order, and a download button for each file.

Comes with Filemonk. Nothing to add.

Order Status page

Product Downloads section listing each digital product with a subtitle and download button.

Optional. Add it in the Checkout editor.

Order Status page — Order summary

Summary Download Buttons: a download button under each digital product.

Optional. Add it in the Checkout editor.

Thank you page and Order Status page

Download Button: displays your thank-you message and a button to access the files.

Optional. See Download button on the new Thank you page.

Filemonk's download email still goes out. Its link takes customers to the order's status page, where they sign in and download.

Orders with no files don't show the button. If you send only for certain order statuses, Filemonk also hides the extensions until the order reaches that status.

Set it up

Step 1: Switch downloads to the account page

  1. Click Filemonk in the left menu of your Shopify admin.
  2. Click Settings in the app's menu, then open the Download page tab.
  3. Under Download files from, select Customer Account page.
  4. Click Save.

The tab now shows the Set up extensions, Orders and Download Page sections.

Step 2: Add the optional extensions

  1. In the Set up extensions section, under Step 1, click Open Filemonk's collection.
  2. In the Choose a configuration window, select your live configuration (marked Live), then click Open editor.
  3. Shopify's Checkout editor opens on Filemonk's Downloads collection. Add Product Downloads, Summary Download Buttons, or both.
  4. Click Save in the top right of the Checkout editor.

To add the Thank you page button as well, follow Download button on the new Thank you page.

Step 3: Set the button and message text

  1. Back on the Download page tab, in the Orders section, click Customize.
  2. Under Thank You extension, set the Thank you message. To insert order details, click Variables and copy a variable into the message.
  3. Set the Button text for the Thank You extension. The default is Access Downloads. This text also labels the button in the order's action menu.
  4. Under Other extensions, set the Button text shown on the Product Downloads and Summary Download Buttons extensions. The default is Download files.
  5. Set the Subtitle shown under each product name in Product Downloads. The default is Downloads available.
  6. Click Save.

The preview beside the fields shows each extension, labelled by name. You can use these variables in the thank you message:

Variable

Shows

{{order.name}}

Order number, for example #1001

{{shop.name}}

Your store name

{{customer.name}}

Customer's name

{{first_product_name}}

Name of the first product on the order

{{product_names}}

All product names, separated by commas

Button colors and style follow your Checkout editor settings, not Filemonk. Change them in the Checkout editor.

Step 4: Customize the download popup

The download popup uses your download page settings. On the Download page tab, in the Download Page section, click Customize. These settings carry into the popup:

  1. The popup's thank you message
  2. Show product & order prices and Show product image
  3. Download limits and expiry dates. See Limit the number of downloads per order.
  4. Messages for files still processing, files not yet available, and limits reached

Colors, fonts, logo and custom CSS apply only to the download page on your store. They don't change the popup. To customize the color on the popup, you'll need to edit it on your checkout editor. See Customize download page.

Check your setup

  1. Place a test order for a product with files. See Create a test order
  2. Open your store in an incognito window and sign in with the test order's email address.
  3. Open Orders, then click Access Downloads on the order, or your own button text if you changed it. The popup should list the files.
  4. Open the order's status page and check the optional extensions you added.

FAQ's

Q: Do customers still get the download email?
A: Yes. The email still goes out, and its link opens the order's status page in the customer's account.

Q: What happens with guest checkout orders?
A: The customer signs in to your store with the email address they used at checkout, and the order shows in their account. Shopify sends them a sign-in code, so they don't need a password.

Q: Can customers see all their past purchases in one place?
A: Yes. The Orders list shows every order, and each order with files has its own download button.

Q: Does this change older orders?
A: Yes. Existing orders move to the account page too. Download links in emails you already sent now open the order's status page.

Q: Can I switch back to the download page on my store?
A: Yes. On the Download page tab, under Download files from, select Your store and click Save. Email links go back to the download page on your store.
